Video Cameras on Helicopters and Radio-Controlled Aircraft – Free Webinar

Last night we held this free webinar on the subject of mounting video cameras on radio-controlled aircraft such as helicopters and quadcopters. This is the recording, and I’m posting it here in its entirety for free.

Enjoy!

Note: I added a short video to the front of the webinar to give some context…

P.S.> Thanks to my dad, Jerry Hyman, for answering so many of our questions.

  • Rulon

Yes, please do include further information on the project.

Here’s thanx to both Izzy and Jerry (Aka-Dad) – really a lot of fun. Also very interesting as to the possibilities for multiple business applications. You both covered the subject well enough that I don’t have any immediate questions.
    Again – Thank you both

  • Dave Pitman

Firstly, thank you both for sharing your gained insight. It is appreciated!

    1. Jerry mentions learning to fly with specific models of helicopter. My question is: If the goal is to use a multiple rotor platform, and not a traditional helicopter, would you still recommend the same progression of models for learning?

    Thanks again,

  • Dave Pitman

A couple more questions.  Jerry mentioned new regulations coming the first of the year.
    1. Where can we go to learn about this.
    2. Jerry mentions the rule that there must be desperate operators of the aircraft and the camera. To do that, do you use 2 transceivers?

    Thanks again!

Have you used an iPhone or iTouch on you Quadcopters?

Dave, I would recommend at least staring with something like a Blade co-ax to begin with so that you can learn how to control the RC model from different visual orientations such as when it is coming towards you ( some of the controls are reversed). This way you can crash over and over without it being too expensive. Then you could go to a simple stable quad like the Gaui 330xs or the just released Miniture Aircraft USA 404X. Or you might consider going with the Blade SR120 (which will really refine your control) after the co-ax, and then go directly to the starter quad or even larger unit for heavy lifting (Canon 7D or 5D rather than a GoPro). This advice is based on you just starting out with little RC experience.

Andries, we have not used an iPhone or iPad (we have both). Right now I don’t think the control interface has enough precision that we need. However, it is being used successfully by some toy like drones.

What type of video transmitter and receiver are used for getting the feed back to the operator?  I want to use this as an end zone camera for scouting football games, does the gopro zoom at all?  Thanks!

What do you think about Arducopter ?
