Izzy Video 063 – Marantz Digital Audio Recorder

izzyvideo63

In this installment of Izzy Video, I briefly review a Marantz Digital Audio Recorder, specifically the PMD-670. It’s a piece of equipment I’ve had for almost a year, and I really like it. I’m not affiliated with Marantz, and this wasn’t a paid sponsorship. I’m simply showing another piece of gear that I find useful.

Update: I don’t use this item for video production anymore. It’s great for recording audio, but I find that the audio recording of my video cameras produce excellent sound with much less hassle.

This video is available to members only.

a couple questions about the Marantz Digital Audio Recorder. I have an hour long show that I record. How big of a media card would I need to capture one hour of audio? and secondly What format does it record in?

Another informative video, Izzy, thanks. I’d like to ask: if you hook up a mic (a condenser mic, in my case) to such a recorder using one XLR cable, does that only give you mono sound? Is that what pretty much everyone does, and when they’re editing, they just duplicate the mono track and fiddle with the panning to achieve stereo?

Justin, The answer to your first question is…it depends. The Marantz can record in MP3 or PCM (think WAV or AIFF). If you record in MP3 you can fit several hours of audio on a 1 gig CF Card. When I record in the high quality mode, I’ve fit about 1 hour of audio onto the 1 gig card. That should answer both questions, I believe.

Stephen, you can set the Marantz to record audio to just one channel, or it can create two mono channels from the one mono source. This is what I do. It saves me the trouble of duplicating the channel in post.

thanks for the info, Israel. So you go back and add the audio track in post? could you explain your process and workflow of syncing the audio/video tracks(time codes? shoot from the hip?)? maybe this lends itself to a screen cast. thanks!

    great shirt by the way!

    Izzy,

    Great stuff as always.
    1) I have used an Olympus VN-480PC digital voice recorder for about $60. It has Windows only (Boo!) download SW through USB in a .wav format. Non expandable memory. Works great for the price. Biggest problem is that it will quickly get out of voice synch if brought into video. How well does the Marantz synch when brought into iMovie, etc?

    2) As a teacher I love the podcasts. I would love to donate $20 for a DVD with all of the episodes until now. How about it?
