Sometimes when you’re shooting video, you’ll end up with bad audio. Many times this results from a persistent background noise of some sort. It could be a hum, wind noise, an air conditioner, traffic, an airplane flying overhead — you get the idea. You can’t always fix these problems in post production, but sometimes you can. In this episode of Izzy Video, I’ll show you how to use a tool called “Noise Reduction” inside of Soundtrack Pro (an application included in Final Cut Studio) to reduce or eliminate unwanted background noise from your video.

This installment of Izzy Video is once again based on email requests from viewers. Several people have asked me to give an overview of my audio sweetening process, so this tutorial is just a quick and dirty example of how I touch up audio before exporting for the web.

What you’ll find in this video:

  • One method to get your audio to Soundtrack Pro and then back to Final Cut Pro
  • How to use the Compressor tool in Soundtrack Pro
  • What is a compression ratio?
  • Ideal levels for audio
  • Where does audio sweetening fall in the overall workflow?

This video is available only to Izzy Video Members. If you’d like to watch it, please visit the membership information page to see how you can become a member and gain access to all of the past Izzy Video archives as well as this episode.

This new video tutorial is about avoiding clicks and pops in the audio portion of your video. I have had several people ask me why they have “click” sounds in their videos. Usually this happens during transitions, and this tutorial should help you avoid those problems in the future.

Izzy Video 051 – Louder Audio

January 14, 2007

Many of the videos I watch on the web are too quiet. I think that’s because new producers tend to spend more time on editing video and not their audio.

There are many things that can make your audio sound better. One of them is simply making it louder. I like to use the Adaptive Limiter in Soundtrack Pro to increase the volume of my audio without clipping. How do you use the Adaptive Limiter? Just watch this installment of Izzy Video, and I’ll show you.

This video is available to members only.
