Izzy Video 060 – Spinning an Image

izzyvideo60

This weekend I’m responding to viewer requests. In a previous tutorial, I included a shot where my website was spinning against a graphical background. Many of you asked how I made that shot, so this week I’m showing you how.

Once again, this tutorial is inside Apple’s Motion, but I’m sure you can create the same effect in a number of different applications.

This video is for members only.

    Hi Izzy,

To take a precise snapshot of a window, just hit the space bar after the apple-shift-4 combo, and the crosshair will turn into a camera, allowing you to capture any window that’s open. It saves the need for cropping afterwards. I don’t know if you deliberately left that out to keep your tutorial simple, but just in case, I thought I’d mention it.

By the way, these tutorials are great, thanks a lot.

Is there a reason why you make the ‘camera’ sweep around the object instead of keeping the camera still and rotating the object. The result will be quite the same, but i was wondering when you had to move the camera, and when to move the object itself.

    great show! keep em coming

Stephen – Thanks for the tip! I have to remember that for next time.

Chance – I don’t know of anything like Cam Twist for Windows, but I’d guess something MUST exist.

Sam – You’re right that you can rotate the page itself. I don’t really know why I did it the way I did, except that I was fooling around with the camera behaviors, so that’s what I did. It would have been much more simple to do it your way. :-)

    Oliver,

Hello again! The software I use for screen capture is called iShowU. You can google it, or just check the FAQ for a link.

    Hope that helps!

    Excellent tutorial!

More more more Motion pleeze! I’m getting my sea legs and it seems I do everything the hard way since I have a background in 3d apps like Lightwave. For instance, a camera sweep is quite a bit more complex than applying a behavior.

I tried to download the video on “f stop” and “field of depth” to watch later at work. (I work at night) “f stop” is in mp4 which is fine. everything else I looked at is in m4v, which DOES NOT OPEN in windows xp. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks.

    Edna,

Yes, I know what the problem is. When I first started publishing Izzy Video, I created m4v files, which must be played in either iTunes or Quicktime. Both players are available for free on the Apple website.

I realized quickly that I needed to publish them as mp4 files, which are more universally accepted.

Anyway, I hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

    Hey man
Good stuff! Great to find your webpage. I like how it has a “beginner” feel to it, as a lot of us ARE beginners when it comes to different topics.
Constructive Criticism: People watching your videos are going to have a low attention span, because we are on the net, and there are many places to go and look at. IN this video, you make some mistakes and fumble around a bit. Although that is a very natural part of the process regardless to what skill level you have, no one wants to see that! I got impatient watching the video, and you lost me half way through. NOt out of disinterest, but out of confidance. I got the feeling you weren’t really confidant on what you were talking about, even if you were. EDIT out the mistakes. There is no valuable argument I can think of for keeping mistakes in there. It wastes the viewers time, and makes you look less competant than you probably are.

    Also:
When mixing the music track of your videos, the volume blasts out full spectrum sound through the speakers, and then you voice is the lowest point in the mix, so the user wants to turn you up to hear. Then, we get blasted by the music.
Advice: Compress the SHIT out of your voice, and keep the music levels proportionate. We don;t really want to listen to the music, it is a formality anyways, so don;t blast it to us, because we don;t really care.
    Just my 2 bits worth.
    Keep up the good work.
