New: My Final Cut Pro X Tutorial is Online and Free!

I’m very excited to announce that my new Final Cut Pro X tutorial is online, and it’s free!

In a nutshell:

  • 2 hours 39 minutes of training videos.
  • Downloadable practice media so you can play along.
  • Web-based so you can access it anywhere.
  • It’s free.

If you have Final Cut Pro X, I hope you find it helpful!

All the best,
Izzy

I support this 100%, what’s a better way to learn than learning for free.

  • Victor.

Fantastic tutorial! Thank you so much. Izzy is a lifesaver for any beginner.

why don’t you upload the media content that you had to remove to megaupload or somewhere like that?

This has been a great resource, and prompted me to renew my subscription.  Thanks again.

Hi Izzy.  Thanks much for making this available to us.  I have only gone through the first 2-3 videos but I can already see that you are sequentially organized and thorough in your presentation of features and control processes.  You don’t become overly verbose but just enough detail by example too, to grasp a concept.  For me this is important as I am relative ‘new’ to this world of video post production. The only constructive criticism if I may, might be to slow down the pace a bit… both speaking speeds and the actual introduction of concepts.  I reckon you are very well versed in video post production programs and this stuff comes off the top of your head as second nature, but for a lot of us who might be new or relative new to the world of video editting, it is necessary to have a little bit of breathing room to grasp a concept.  Before I completely comprehend a function that was just presented, already ‘let’s move on to the next item’.   Perhaps maybe about a 20% slowdown might be in order.  I know this will increase the length of the videos and the size of the videos by a similar factor, but rather then quantity over quality,  why not quantity AND quality?  (*J*)  Having said all that, I reckon there is always the pause button  / space bar… :-)

After I go traverse through the entire tutorial, I will revisit again with more comment, if I may.  I have also shared your information at my Facebook account and gave you a positive promotion.  Look me up there should you care to read it.    I may sign up down the road as a result of this.  I guess that’s the ‘Law of Attraction’ in action, eh?!

Oh, if you get around to it in your busy schedule,  to complete this, the creation of quick overview / orientation tutorials for Compressor and Motion 5 might also be in order and nice to have in your arsenal.  Again, I am thinking of someone who is consumer, prosumer, that wants to elevate beyond the level of just iMovie stuff.  No need to dumb it down too much, but similar to the orientation as you do now for FCP-X.  Thanks again for your efforts and making this available.

Great feedback. Thanks Jerry. I’ll try to slow down more on the next one… :)

Great tutorial! Reading all the negative criticism of FCPX on the web, having watched this I am totally convinced that FCPX looks awesome and is going to be great for me and others that work in my organisation…. just need to convince my line manager that dropping £179 to get it is a bargain…. :-)

    Hi Izzy,
Firstly my heartfelt compliments with the course material you provided on FCP X.
The first thing I did after buying FCP X was looking for training, and I found a course by Steve Martin of Rippletraining. It is an excellent course and is probably a bit better structured and thought out than the one you provided. But yours is free and you probably didn’t had a chance to study the software at least for two months prior to launch.

As a member I however was somewhat surprised that you didn’t mention/promote  the course on the members page so they were effectively left out.
I hope you make these lessons and the training material available for members as downloads so they can store them in iTunes and i.e. on their iPad.
The last week I have read almost all articles (not the comments!) about the merits and misses of FCP X but as a prosumer, who almost hated Final Cut Express because it was slow, tricky and out of date, I am very impressed by FCP |X so far.
Looking for new video-casts in the member section.

Izzy thanks (muchas gracias) for the free FCP X tutorial, right now I am watching it.

    Hi Hans,

    Here another Hans (from NL).
    Are this beautiful movies downloadable?
I am a new user of FCP X and want this perfect content for learning.

    Regards,

    Hans

I’ve now watched most of the videos and it’s an awesome series you’ve put together so quickly. As Jerry stated it’s a bit fast paced but nothing beats an instructor that’s enthusiastic about what he or she teaches :). I’m looking forward to the more in depth videos like the one you just did with the color masking.

Great work – keep it up!

    Cheers from Denmark

This was excellent and to be “free” makes it that much better. Some have said your pace was too fast, but I didn’t think so. Maybe they need to find the pause and rewind button? I thought the whole thing was perfect. You’re an excellent teacher.

Izzy, as an old timer “editor” from the times of the Steenbeck,I applaud the clarity of you explanations you are a true educator thanks.

Awesome free tutorial!!! It really helped me understand and use FCPX… You should pimp your for fee product more, I got a feeling that it would increase sales…I really liked your approach to layout and flow of the information, even a knuckle dragger like myself can do it. I have FCS3 and I’m probably in the minority, but i like the layout of the new FCPX (I am not a pro vid editor, so I’m sure I like it because I ignorant to the full capabilities of FCP7…). Thank you for the lessons!!!

Thank you very much for your time!  This is an awesome Final Cut Pro X tutorial and the best thing, it’s for free!  Please continue with the good job!

Thank yoz very much for this fantastic tutorial. I have 2 questions, though. When you trim a clip, the preview window shows the starting and ending frame side by side, but my preview window won’t do the same, even if I did everything as you did. Other: when I transcode my h.264 sources to prores proxies, how can I relink them to the original h.264 sources before exporting? Thanks in advance, keep us posted!

  • http://www.izzyvideo.com IzzyVideo

Thanks for the kind words. :)

I don’t have FCP X right in front of me, but going from memory — In preferences, under editing, there’s an option for “detailed trimming preview” or something like that. Make sure it’s checked, and you’ll start to see the first and last frames.

Also, for re-linking — You don’t have to do any of that. Final Cut Pro X does all the re-linking automatically in the background. :)

    I hope that helps!

  • G Lazlow

    Thank you! Problem solved! :)

Thank you Izzy for this Tutorial! I was about to leave the Final Cut world and transist to Premiere. But after working through your videos I must say this is a great piece of software. For sure lacking some Pro features (Multicam, XML…) and some minor features (like adjusting the level in the letterbox filter effect) but I’m sure Apple will fix this soon. My advice: for a one man show it’s almost good as it is now. For (high level) pros  it probably will be in the future.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for this amazing tutorial series. It’s been SO helpful, and I’m struck by your wonderful GENEROSITY in putting it all out there for free. Bravo! You’ve just earned a new mega-fan.

  • Moose

Izzy, THANK YOU!  This was just what I needed… I am switching from Imovie to this and it rocked!

  • Nick

I have the opposite feedback actually – I appreciated the quick pace. Much better than sitting through a lot of the slower-paced training out there. Video is much easier to pause/slow down than skim/speed up, so I say keep it up! You have a rare and valuable ability to get to the point without wasting people’s time. Thanks!

  • http://www.izzyvideo.com IzzyVideo

    Okay, then I won’t slow down. :)

    Thanks for the comment!

Thank you so much, you did really a great job!

Since I’m an iMovie switcher, I was wondering if there’s a way to have clips marked that are already in use? In iMovie there’s an orange bar in the film strip for used portions. I haven’t found it in FCPX so far but find it very useful. Anyone’s got an idea?

    Thanks again!

  • Izhar Ashdot

    Hi Izzy,

Your FCPX tutorial is the most generous gift I’ve received in a long time.

It helped me realize that FCPX is a groundbreaking video app, with very little missing in functionality.
FCPX’s main problem is the bad choice of “consumer” terminology in some of its commands.

Thank you and keep up the great work.

I’m with Nick. Pause, reflect, rewind, full ahead, that’s the way :-)
