Izzy Video 037 – Machinima

This video tutorial is a quick introduction to machinima. If you don’t know what machinima is, don’t worry. You’re not alone. It’s pretty cutting-edge stuff right now. For film-makers it offers the chance to have a moving story-board. Or you can create your whole film there.

I know this video tutorial isn’t going to be for everyone, but I’m sure some of you might be interested in creating narratives in this virtual world. To those of you who hate this one, I apologize, but I have to stray from the mainstream every once in a while.

    Izzy, since you’re doing something on machinima, you might also find it useful to talk about more serious 3D animation softwar. Blender is available for free, and is capable of quite professional results. The initial learning curve with 3D software can be a little high, but the rewards, even early on, are well worth it. They’re also great tools for learning about cameras and lighting and things, since you can easily setup stages, and move virtual lights and cameras around, etc.

    Have a look at Elephant’s Dream, which is a free demo animation that was made with Blender:

    Hardly Hated. I signed up for second life after hearing about it on TWIT. What I hope viewers will get from this episode, and what I was hoping you were going to get around to during the episode, is that it is a great way for beginers to learn to frame shots, use motion, and play with a bunch of the other things you have taught us in your videos without having to waste time, tape, or hire/beg family and friends to pose while we learn.

    But, of course, now that you have found second life we will never hear from you again… :)

    Just answering the question about a capturing tool. Either you can use the builtin video capture function (although it never really worked for me) or you can use Fraps at http://fraps.com/ (but it costs some bucks).

    There is also a Machinima Forum for Second Life in the forums on the site and there are sometimes classes. More on that can be found at http://alt-zoom.com

    Israel, I really like your header image. Reminds me of when I was a youth in Thailand, some of the hotels had big chessboards with jumbo pieces, much as the ones you are sitting between.

    Gentle intro, I really like how you did the splash with your letters “falling” in and out — how’d you do that movie magic?

    I’m not the fondest of the word “machinima” (reminds me of “paper mache”), but seeing as how it has popular usage and means more to more people day by day, I use it to communicate.
