Izzy Video 153 – How to Export Single Images from Video Clips

You need Adobe Flash Player to view this video.

If you think about it, a video camera is similar to a regular still camera shooting 30 frames per second. There ARE some huge differences, but it’s definitely possible to export a single frame from your video in 1080p and then print it as a 4×6 photo. I’ve done it, and it looks pretty darn good.

In this tutorial, I’ll show you a simple way to export a single frame of video for printing or for posting to the web…or really whatever you want to do with it. Also, I’ll show you how to export a sequence of images.

This tutorial is for members only, but you can watch the trailer here.

UPDATE: I’ve had a few viewers tell me that their version of Quicktime doesn’t allow exporting like I show in this video. I guess I have Quicktime Pro and didn’t even realize it (It must have been installed with Final Cut Studio or something.) Sorry about the confusion… I suppose it’s not quite a free method for doing things. :-(

I very much like the quality of the videos you have produced. Could you tell me the brand of the camcorder you used to do them? I am on the verge of buying a good quality camcorder. Right now I just have a flip and it will not do what I am intending to do.

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Patricia!

    Thanks for the kind words.

I use three different cameras to shoot my videos. Mostly I use my Sony PMW-EX1. Sometimes I use my Canon 5D Mark II. And occasionally I use a Canon HV20.

In this specific video of Aiden with the sunglasses, I used the Canon 5D Mark II.

I hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

I use Sony Vegas (PC) and can export a single frame fairly easy with it. I just bring the video on the timeline, arrow over to the frame I want, and click the “save as” icon. Looks pretty good.

Izzy, regarding this tutorial. I have QT 10.0 It came with my Mac. This version does not allow you to pull stills from video. Any suggestions?
