Izzy Video 137 – How to Use Wild Sound to Create Continuity

Izzy Video 137 - How to Use Wild Sound to Create Continuity

Sometimes when people shoot video, they forget about the audio. In this tutorial, my goal is to help you add a tool to your audio toolbox that can help ease the transition from one clip in your sequence to the next. It’s called wild sound.

Topics I cover in this tutorial:

  • What is wild sound?
  • What tools do you need to capture it?
  • A couple tips for capturing it
  • How you can use it in your sequence

The ‘before and after’ example in this video is pretty subtle. My recommendation is that you wear headphones and listen closely so you’ll be able to hear the difference.

Great tip Izzy. Nobody hardly mentions the value of grabbing wild sound and using it this way. I know this is about the use of wild sound, but I’ve found that combining wild sound and specific sound effects can even further enhance the “illusion” that the sound is really natural.

For example, what if you found a sound effect or two of some duck sounds by themselves, then synced them – probably a tad louder than the BG wild sounds you added – to the two duck shots. One of the ducks actually opens it’s bill at one point. Also, some SFX of lapping lake water at about -30db might work for those shots. Finally, in the shot of Trinity and (sorry I forgot the little guy’s name) you could have some music playing in the background that you’ve processed through a hi-pass filter, making it really tinny (don’t you have a tutorial on how to make a audio sound like a phone call?) and play that about -40db, then when you cut to Blake pump it up about 6db more to make it feel like the shots flow better. The tinny sound will sound like it’s playing through his iPod headphones. Just some thoughts.
