Izzy Video 129 – How to Darken Your Background Outdoors

Izzy Video 129 - How to Darken Your Background Outdoors

In this video tutorial, I demonstrate the final tool I recommend as part of your outdoor lighting gear. It’s a black net. You can use a black net for a lot of things, but it’s an excellent tool to cut the light in a background. In this video, you’ll see how I use an 8×8 Scrim Jim with a double black net to darken the background behind the subject. This is the last lighting control tutorial I have planned for the “Shooting Outdoors” series. More on shooting outdoors is still to come, but not on lighting.

This video is archived in the members-only area.

Also, if you’re interested in the live workshop I’m doing on April 17th, 2009, you can get the details here.

If you’re not an Izzy Video member, you might want to check out how it works so you can see the rest of the videos in the “Shooting Outdoors” series, along with more than 100 other videos. Members get more. A lot more.

May I ask are you a professional videographer, or are you a hobbyist?

That’s sort of tricky to answer. I guess you could say both, because I’m originally a hobbyist, but then it transformed into my full time profession. Why do you ask?

Coz its impressive to see someone just take on an area the way you have done. I think there are a lot of hobbysists out there who never make dollar one. You’ve carved out a spot just by collecting info and repackaging it. Kudos bro! You are my role model

Digger — Well thanks for the kind words!

The most important thing is to keep producing valuable content that people will find educational. I try my best to make everything easy to understand because that’s the real trick. Video has a tendency to get overly technical too quick, and the technical parts are important, but they’re not everything.

The Izzy Video audience is very diverse. Some viewers are professionals; others are hobbyists; others are just people who want to shoot better video of their families. I try to cover all aspects so it will be appealing to a wide variety of viewers.

I guess time will tell whether I succeed at that. :-)

    Thanks again!

Sawang — Hi, and thanks for watching!

Yes, the free iTunes feed only has a few episodes in it, usually the most recent few. If you would like to see more of the free episodes, you can manually download them from the website here. Or if you want access to all of the past episodes, you would need to become an Izzy Video Member.

I really like your work. To become an Izzy video member, is it a one time fee and I can watch all the great videos?
by the way do you need apprentice?

    Hi Dutch!

Yes, it’s a one time fee that gets you access for six months – where you can find all the past videos. And I don’t need an apprentice right now, but thanks for the offer. :-)

    All the best,

    Izzy
