Izzy Video 029 – F-Stop

This video tutorial reviews more details regarding what an F-Stop is, and how it works. This will answer some of the questions I’ve received from Izzy Video audience members regarding both exposure and depth-of-field.

By the way, my 8-year-old son, Blake, did the camera work on this one. Not bad for a first time!

    I would LOVE to see you put together a “how to video podcast” podcast!

    I’d also like to say “thanks” for the wonderful tutorials that you are putting out. You teach the basics that I learned YEARS sgo when first started shooting video as a TV news videographer (back when we were still called “photogs.”) I now own a video production company and my production guys are required to watch your videos. We are in the middle of shooting a movie with a well known film maker, and your tips bridged many production gaps.

    Thanks again and again for your efforts (and PLEASE post the “how to video podcast” tutorials!) :)

    Nice explanation of the F-Stop, I had heard about it before, but really hadn’t paid much attention to it.

    My camcorder is one of the ones that need to be upgraded to take advantage of this.

    Another great job of explaining the F-stop/depth of field concepts. I liked it better that you’re actually on screen explaining the concepts rather than the black screens with text you had previously. You may have wanted to demonstrated what an image looks like with the different F-stops and the lighting differences.

    Keep them episodes coming, they are very educational.

    I have been working on DOF with my Canon XL2 for the past few months and although the lens has a 2 fstop ND setting, it still does not give me good control of the focal planes. I have tried using heavy ND filters with the lowest fstop but still can’t get the shallow DOF I need. I know the small CCDs are primarily the reason and had seen the P+S Technik Mini35 but it is too expensive. Is there other options I’m not finding?

    Im not able to download the video tutorials. Upon clicking the link there is some activity in PC but it’s actually not downloading. UPon right-clicking and saving only 10% or 12% of the file is saved and it’s automaticaly stops. Please help me

    Frank, no thanks necessary! I enjoy making these, although I don’t do it as often as I used to. I’m starting to run out of ideas that aren’t overly complex.

    Israel: I too wish to thank you for all the great help you’ve given me in becoming a better videographer. You mentioned you were running out of ideas for tips, I’d like to suggest a couple. First, many of us video our kids in dark places (theater, gymnastics, plays, etc) and I’ve always had trouble getting the exposure and lighting right in these settings. Also, how about sports video (soccer, karate, gymnastics, swimming) What exposure settings would work well in these settings? I’m assuming of course the camera has some manual settings. Mine is a Sony PD170.
