Izzy Video 031 – Color Correction, Quick and Dirty

I get questions all the time on how to do different things in Final Cut Pro, so I’ve decided to give it another try. This one is about Color Correction. I am not an expert in Color Correction. I’ve hardly even worked my way up to the level of Novice, but I’ve found certain things helpful, and the different scopes included in FCP are useful.

Also, as I mention in the podcast, I’m showing FCP because I’ve never done video editing in Windows before. I apologize for being so specific to those of you who use other editors, but perhaps there is value in the concepts, and you could translate the specific techniques into your own workflow and software.

Also, I realized after I was done that I repeatedly used the phrase “washed out” to describe the picture, when what I meant to say was “flat”. It was more washed out after I was done, but at least it wasn’t flat! Anyway, I didn’t want to record the audio all over again, so I took the easy way out and just posted it in its flawed state. Ha! Please forgive my laziness.

    “Quick and dirty”? It’s your longest episode so far! :-)

    For what it’s worth, Final Cut Express has a almost identical color correction functionality, just without any of the scopes. In the Color Corrector window, there’s a small button near the bottom-right corner labeled “Auto Contrast” when you point at it. When you click on that, it’ll “stretch” the contrast while staying within broadcast-safe limits.

    Great job again! I bought a book on Color Correction a few months ago and never got around to opening it up. Now I’m re-inspired to get back into it. I have a feeling though that I learned more in your 7 minute video then I’ll get out of the 400 page book!!

    BTW, what tool did you use to capture the FCP screen? did you video tape the screen or use a screen capture tool?

    About the question whether it would be a good idea to make a video of how to make a videopodcast: that’s exactly the kind of info I already have been able to find online. What you have been producing up untill right now is really great and pretty unique, so at least for me, it’s perfect as it is. Thumbs up and greetings from the Netherlands!

    Thanks for all the tutes, they’re really helped me along. This one especially helped fix up a heap of shots, and improve others, from my latest vid. I had no idea how to do this before.

    I use premiere and the concept is the same, just differnt gui.

    I’ve got both before color correction and after up on the net if you want to check them out, email me. Its a parkour vid so might give some ideas for a tute sometime (fast action shots).
