Izzy Video 94 - Fixing Flat Video

izzyvideo94

This past weekend, my family went on a short road trip to Show Low, Arizona. On the way back, we stopped along the side of the road, put the video camera on a tripod, and shot some footage of ourselves. Since we were all in the picture, nobody was operating the camera. Also, an approaching storm was imminent, and I was afraid it would rain, so I rushed through the camera setup and forgot to adjust the exposure.

The footage turned out terrible. It’s too dark, flat, and unexciting.

In this installment of Izzy Video, I show a quick way to make the footage look (a little) better.

Izzy Video 90 - Color Grading

izzyvideo90

Many people are intimidated by the concept of “Color Grading”, which is the act of adjusting color in your final video image. I want to make it less intimidating.

In this installment of Izzy Video, I introduce you to Color Grading, and I get things started in Color, the new application in Final Cut Studio 2. This tutorial reviews basic color grading concepts like Primary Color Correction and Secondary Color Correction. What’s the difference? The answer is in this video.

You can get Izzy Video 90 here.

*This video is one of the most important tutorials I have done so far. I’m releasing it free via Creative Commons. You can pass it around, post it on your site, link to it, burn it to DVD, and so on. You just can’t sell it or change it, and please make sure you link back to my site or mention that I created it. Thanks!

*Update: This is a link to a higher-quality version if you want everything bigger on your screen. Bigger download, but it’s certainly easier to see.

*Premium subscribers have this one available in High Definition.

If you’re not already using Final Cut Studio 2, after watching this video, you might want to check it out. If so, please use my Amazon link right here (anything you purchase will support Izzy Video financially). Apple Final Cut Studio 2 (Mac)

Izzy Video 87 - Catch Lights

izzyvideo87

This installment of Izzy Video explores “Catch Lights” which are the little bright lights in a person’s eyes that give them “life”. It’s a simple episode, but it’s a useful one.

Izzy Video 84 - Anchor Points in Motion

izzyvideo84

Many of you have asked me to release some free Motion tutorials, so that’s what this week’s free Izzy Video is all about.

Motion is very powerful, and my personal opinion is the best way to learn it is one concept at a time. In this brief tutorial, I demonstrate an interesting way to use an Anchor Point in a 3D environment.

Izzy Video 79 - Improve Your Online Video

izzyvideo79

A few months ago I ran a session at Podcamp AZ, and it was called “Improve Your Online Video.” It was an hour-long session, but for this installment of Izzy Video, I condensed it down to under six minutes.

Inside you’ll find suggestions for how to improve video, and three keys (which I learned from Tim Street) to creating a viral video.

You can get Izzy Video 79 here.

*This week I decided to release the free version in 640×480, which is the size normally reserved for the premium subscribers. The premium subscribers also receive access to all past Izzy Video tutorials, and two additional members-only episodes per month.

Izzy Video 75 - Review of the Sony XDCAM EX

izzyvideo75

My new camcorder is the Sony XDCAM EX. Although this seems to be what everyone’s calling it, the actual model number is Sony PMW-EX1. In this installment of Izzy Video, I give a miniature video review of the new camera.

If you haven’t heard of this camera before, I should let you know that it’s pretty revolutionary.

You can get Izzy Video 75 here.

If you would like to see footage from this new camera, head over to www.paperclipping.com, and watch the high quality version of episode 26. The last couple shows, we’ve shot using this camera. It’s exciting to be able to release our shows in HD.

By the way, this is the free version of Izzy Video, which is 320×240 resolution. The premium subscribers receive it in 640×480 resolution, along with access to all past Izzy Video tutorials.

Izzy Video 38 - How I Do My Podcast

izzyvideo38

I received many requests for this particular topic. I realize that there are plenty of “how to make a podcast” type of articles out there, so it probably doesn’t make sense to add another one.

I couldn’t resist. Making a podcast is easy, and this ten minute video will show you exactly how I do it. You can use the same process if you want, although there are many alternative ways to accomplish the same thing.

This is the type of tutorial I recommend you view a couple times. Maybe watch it once all the way through, and then a second time, pausing as you go, so you can actually do the different steps described inside.

It’s a little technical, so I hope you enjoy it.

Izzy Video 37 - Machinima

izzyvideo37

Izzy Video 37 is a quick introduction to machinima. If you don’t know what machinima is, don’t worry. You’re not alone. It’s pretty cutting-edge stuff right now. For film-makers it offers the chance to have a moving story-board. Or you can create your whole film there.

See what I’m talking about in Izzy Video 37.

I used my favorite Brother Love song again in this podcast, courtesy of music.podshow.com.

I know Izzy Video 37 isn’t going to be for everyone, but I’m sure some of you might be interested in creating narratives in this virtual world. To those of you who hate this one, I apologize, but I have to stray from the mainstream every once in a while.

Izzy Video 32 - Voiceover

izzyvideo32

In Izzy Video 32, I start a series that will demonstrate techniques for making your own documentary. This first part discusses voiceover.

Also, sorry I missed last week. Noell and I vacationed in Rocky Point, Mexico with our friends, the Keims (host of www.rollingrs.com, our sister video podcast). As always, we had a great time!

Oh yeah, one more thing. The beautiful piano song in this Izzy Video is from Rob Costlow. It’s “Not Alone.” Check it out at music.podshow.com.

Izzy Video 23 - Using Still Photos

izzyvideo23

In Izzy Video 23, I demonstrate the “Ken Burns Effect.” Using this technique, you can use still photos to add interesting effects to your videos. It’s dead simple to do in iMovie. Of course, I use Final Cut Pro, and it works fine!

Izzy Video 8 - Filters

izzyvideo08

This is a special midweek bonus episode. Normally I only put episodes out on weekends, but this week I had a little extra time to make a second one. Episode 08 is very simple, but hopefully answers some of the questions I’ve been getting via email about what types of filters are available. This is certainly not all-encompassing, nor is it very complex. It’s a simple demo of different filters.

The music in this episode is by Jim Fidler, courtesy of music.podshow.com. You can download several of his songs for free, and use them in your own podcasts, if you’d like.

Also, the set of Final Cut Pro filters I used in the video can be purchased from www.nattress.com. I am not in any way affiliated with nattress.com, other than the fact that I am a happy customer of theirs. They are not a sponsor.

Izzy Video 6 - Fast and Slow Motion

izzyvideo06

This episode covers several different ways you can use “Fast Motion” and “Slow Motion” in your Digital Video.

It’s no secret that I love hearing everybody’s feedback. Thank you for all the compliments, and I certainly plan on posting many more episodes.

If you like the tutorials, and would like to support it, please refer your friends and family. Hopefully, they’ll find it useful as well.

I’m open to any feedback, or criticisms on how to improve. Please let me know if there’s something I can do to make these better.
