Izzy Video 057 – “Analyze Motion” and “Match Move” in Apple’s Motion

izzyvideo57

You can create some interesting special effects in your videos using the behaviors “Analyze Motion” and “Match Move” in Apple’s Motion. Motion’s capabilities appear endless, and can be quite intimidating, but I keep things very simple in this video podcast.

This installment of Izzy Video shows you how to use Motion to create a “magic wand” out of a stick.

Here is the link to the video.

Once you’re done watching this video, you can also watch other free sample episodes.

    Thanks for the compliment!

I agree with you when you say there are numerous ways to use this technique. I’m looking forward to doing some experimentation.

Also, my kids can’t get enough of these special effects!

For anyone using After Effects, what you want is under Window -> Tracker Controls

Here’s a tutorial that uses that:

Awesome. Of course, now I’m going to have to load Motion.

Keep the Motion tutorials coming, Izzy! Great stuff.

Now Hudson’s REALLY going to want to be Harry Potter…

Ryan – Thanks for the link for After Effects users. Good thinking!

Dan – I’m definitely going to keep Motion tutorials coming. It’s a powerful application, and there just isn’t a lot of information about it online, espcially when compared to other more established apps like Final Cut Pro and so on. By the way, once Blake saw the final result of the “magic wand” shot, he started brainstorming ALL KINDS of other things to do with Motion.

It would’ve been nice to have these kinds of toys back when we were kids!

I’ve seen some responses on your other videos where people say, “Why only Motion? Can’t you show how in something else?” So I figured I’d head that off at the pass. If I made a series like this, I’d end up using AE and ignore Motion because that’s what I usually use.

What version of Motion are you using? I cracked open my Motion 2.1, but don’t see all the same buttons as in the video. I need to go through the tutorials that came with it and get a feel for things…

  • http://techgeek.com Jim Garvin

Your information is great. Could you please mention the product version in your tutorials? I Have Motion 2 and don’t have “analyze motion” Thanks.

  • http://www.izzyvideo.com Israel

Dan and Jim, Unfortunately you need Motion 3 for these new features. I purchased Final Cut Studio 2 as soon as it was released because it had so many new features that I wanted to explore.

Motion’s 3D capabilities are a big part of that. Some of the stuff I’ve seen is mind-blowing from such a simple product.

this is tremendous. you are so patient. i had no idea tutorials like this exist.
is it possible to ask a question andbe directed to tutorials you think are applicable… or do you take requests?
    thank you.

its so nice to find this.

  • http://www.izzyvideo.com Israel

    Jackson,

Of course you can make requests! In fact, I get a lot of my ideas for future Izzy Video tutorials from viewer requests.

I recommend you head to izzyvideo.wikia.com and add your request to the growing list you’ll find there.

    Thanks,

    Israel
