Izzy Video 027 – An Interesting Effect

In this video tutorial, I demonstrate how to do an interesting effect by using some creative editing (you’ll have to watch the video to see the example). I received the instructions for this effect from a gentleman named Sherman Wing from www.insidestreetball.com. Sherman, thanks for sending in the tip!

I created the effect in Final Cut Pro, and it looks great.

Also, if anybody else in the Izzy Video audience would like to suggest some techniques, please go ahead and leave them in the comments. I enjoy trying new things, and I’m always looking for good ideas.

    Thanks for the great tip. I have a very selfish comment to make. I use Adobe’s Premier Pro as my editing software and while this tip was very easy to replicate I’m concerned that future tips might not be and that you just keep those of us using something other than Final Cut in mind while producing tips.

    Nice tip. I don’t think I can recreate this directly in iMovie (I have that but not Final Cut Pro). But I think that it ought to be fairly straightfoward in Quicktime Pro (which I have). Am I right in thinking that I can ofset two clips and change the opacity directly in Quicktime Pro?

    By the way, in your opinion, is Final Cut Express worth while as a next step up for a hobbyist? FC Pro is a bit steep but Express might be doable.

    Hey Izzy, great tip, that effect is awesome! I’ll have to use it in the video I’m making now, should be really cool.

    I use Sony Vegas, and it should be easy to follow the FCP instructions to use in Vegas too.

    (to Brad Balfour, you should check out Sony Vegas Studio, or the non-Studio version, it really rocks!)

    This is a great technique for a dreamy / horror type scene as well. I use vegas, and it’s really easy to move the track just a frame or two, and then lower the opacity to the desired effect.

    You can really get some cool effects with this trick. Thanks for another great video, but I do agree with the fellow above, Final Cut isn’t the only software out there, and some of us feel other software is actually better, so it might be good to stay away from program specifics.

    I do not understand complaints about this tip being software specific. These are FREE tutorials and nobody should expect that author will repeat this tutorial in all possible platform/software combination or avoid it just because not everyone uses FCP. It doesn’t matter which software you have/like. It matters what tools author of these tutorials uses. The same way some of the topics may be relevant or interesting only to some people. What if he shows some camera specific tric? Does this give me a right to complain “What about Sony FX1, it is better than Cannon XL”? It makes no sense to complain and makes no sense for Izzy not to show software or camera specific tips. EVERY SINGLE of those clips are are very useful for me and I’m sure to most of your viewers.

    Thank you Izzy, and… keep creating tips for FCP, because it is the best software (just kidding :-)
    Also please, create tutorials about creating video podcasts.

    I just moved up from iMovie to Final Cut Express… This is an awesome effect that really does make things look cool! By the way, Mr. Brad Balfour, I bought Final Cut Express, and for $250, it was totally worth it! But, if you get it and have not done anything other than iMovie, GET A BOOK WITH IT! It’ll help.
