Going from Photography to Videography: The Most Important Things to Know – Izzy Video 186

Loading the player …

Over the past couple years, I’ve noticed that there’s a group of people who are getting into video in a big way right now. Who are they? Photographers!

It only makes sense for a few reasons:

  • Photographers are interested in capturing imagery.
  • Their gear frequently has video capabilities too (such as the Canon 5D Mark II).
  • They might have clients asking for video along with photography.
  • Photographers already know a lot of what they need to know to shoot amazing video, because photography and videography have so much in common.

That said, there are some differences between photography and videography, and in this new tutorial I cover two of the big differences and how to master them.

If you’re a photographer who is looking to grow your video skills, I think you’ll love this tutorial!

The Two Categories of Video Cameras – Izzy Video 185

Izzy Video 185

The most common question I receive is “What video camera should I get?” It’s a very difficult question to answer without knowing a lot of information such as:

  1. Your budget
  2. How you’ll be using the camera
  3. The available cameras to choose from

It’s more empowering for you to know how to classify cameras so you can make a lot of the decision yourself. For example, nearly all video cameras can be classified into ENG or Cine style categories. These two types of cameras are very different in several ways, so it’s one of the first decisions you need to make.

The good news is that once you make the decision to either purchase an ENG camera or a Cine camera, you limit the camera selection dramatically, which makes your decision much easier.

This new episode of Izzy Video is a 17 minute recording I presented as a webinar last week. It goes over the differences between ENG and Cine cameras and how you might use them, and what you can do with the information. I hope you find it helpful!

Video Lighting Equipment: Tools You Use to Create the Look You Want

If you want your video image to look professional, one of the most important things you can do is pay attention to the lighting. There are two things you need:
Video Lighting Techniques

  1. An understanding of video lighting techniques
  2. The right tools for the job

In this article, I’ll briefly introduce you to some of the most common video lighting equipment.

Lighting Gear Categories

You can break video lighting equipment down into several different categories:

  • Sources of Light (such as lamps and reflectors)
  • Light quality modifiers (such as diffusion material to make light softer)
  • Light reducers (such as scrims and neutral density)
  • Light controllers (such as barn doors and other accessories that help control the light direction)
  • Light color modifiers (filtration)

Let’s get into more detail on each of these… (more…)
