Izzy Video 166 – How to Shoot Video in Low Light Situations

Izzy Video 166

When you shoot video in low light situations, the results can be very frustrating. You’ll find the image is full of noise, particularly in the shadows. The overall look is muted, under-saturated, and flat. Sometimes the image looks soft.

Yet we see examples of great-looking low light shots in television and movies all the time. How do they get those shots?

This tutorial will answer that question. In it, I show you the seven keys to shooting video in low-light situations.

This video is available to members only.

Question for you…

Hi again!

I’m having a hard time deciding which of these subjects I should cover next, because I don’t know which one you want to see most.

So, I thought it would make sense to ask you. These are the topics I’m considering for the next Izzy Video tutorial:

  1. How to shoot video in small rooms.
  2. How to shoot video in low light situations.
  3. How to use the Zoom H4n audio recorder.
  4. How to dramatically improve family video without buying more gear.

As you know, my goal is to make stuff that’s helpful to you, so I really want your input.

Which one do you want me to cover next? Please let me know in the comments…

Coming Soon: Our New Design Show – StuffDesignersDo.com

I’m very excited to announce that we’re about to launch a new design show! We’ve shot several of the episodes, and we’re working on final touches before we launch.

If you have any interest in design and would like to learn (or review) the fundamentals of design, you can sign up at StuffDesignersDo.com to get notified when we launch.

This show is an Izzy Video production, and it’s hosted by Brent Spore. Brent is a talented designer, and he’s got a fun, charismatic way of communicating the fundamentals of design. You’ll see what I mean soon…

Why are we launching this new show?

I realized the web needs this series when I went searching for videos to help me learn some design stuff, and I couldn’t find much. As more and more people are trying to design their own logos, websites, and whatever — there’s a growing need for design education online.

I found many websites on the topic, but I couldn’t find many videos. And I’m talking about the fundamentals — not necessarily how to use software like Illustrator and Photoshop.

When does it launch?

We don’t know yet, but we know it’s soon — probably in the next couple weeks.

What should you do in the meantime?

Head over to StuffDesignersDo.com and get on the mailing list so you’ll get notified as soon as we launch. And if you really want to help us spread the word, you could also tweet and blog about it.

I’m very excited about this show. I think it fills a real need online, and I can’t wait to hear what everyone thinks about it.

Stay tuned…!

A quick update on the forums

I just logged into the members-only forums and saw that we’re up to 475 posts on 127 different topics. Most of the topics are questions where a member needs help, and then other members and I try our best to answer them.

And the questions cover a wide variety of topics, such as:

  • Gear
  • Lighting
  • Audio
  • Editing
  • Operating a Camera
  • Online Video

Why am I telling you this? I think this is another valuable resource for the members. If you’re not an Izzy Video member, and you have an interest in video, you should look into becoming one.

Obviously I’m biased, but I honestly think a membership is a good resource for people who like video.

And the forums are just another reason to do it. :-)

Izzy Video 165 – High Definition Clips in Standard Definition Sequences

Izzy Video 165

This video includes a preview from the Advanced Final Cut Express course I’m working on right now.

What happens when you’ve shot high definition footage, but the final version of your video will be standard definition? Well, there are several different ways to handle this, but one of the things you can do is get creative with all those extra pixels. This video will show you how to fake a zoom in post. It’s similar to the Ken Burns effect, except you apply it to a video clip.

You’ll see me working in Final Cut Express in this video, but you could do a similar technique in most editors that let you put SD and HD footage in the same sequence.

This video is available to members only.
