Izzy Video 105 – Color Grading Workflow In-Depth
This week’s video tutorial is on the subject of color grading. Specifically, you get to see my entire workflow as I grade a casual video clip in Apple’s Color. Don’t worry about the specific application, though. Many of the concepts in this video should be universal among most color grading tools.
Some of the topics I cover are:
- Principles of Cropping
- Waveform Monitors
- Vectorscopes
- Primary and Secondary Color Grades
- HSL Keys
- Vignettes
This might be one of the single most educational episodes I’ve made so far. It certainly strays from the short, focused structure I typically use — it’s more than 20 minutes long. But I still tried to make sure it was packed with good, useful information.
And to top it all off, I’m releasing it under a Creative Commons License, so you can pass it around and share it as much as you would like.
You can get the video tutorial here.
Because it’s a screencast, it only seems appropriate that I should also release it in a higher resolution to make the screen easier to see.
By the way, both of these are huge downloads, but I didn’t want to compromise too much on the picture quality, so I settled for big file sizes.

Great video, Izzy! Full of excellent info, and it certainly didn’t feel like it was over 20 mins long.

Sean — Thank you very much for sharing my work with your friends. I love it when folks help me promote the show!
Also, I didn’t make this intro. There’s a talented designer, Abbas Ali Khan from Final Echo, who made it for me. Personally, I think he does incredible work, and I believe he created the intro using a combination of Adobe After Effects and Illustrator.
He’s very creative!
Stephen – Thanks for the feedback as always. I’m glad it didn’t feel like it was 20 minutes long. It didn’t for me either, and I had to watch it over and over as I was creating and editing it.
Do you all like this kind of tutorial? Do you prefer these over the live video ones, or vice-versa, or a nice mixture of both?

Thanks for this one. I liked it a lot. What’s the song at the end when you preview the before & after? That’s one of the coolest song I’ve ever heard in a while! Thx! Jose.

Hi Izzy,
Thanks for showing me how to do a few things in Color. I have never used the application before, although it is part of the Final Cut Studio bundel I bought. I’ve been experimenting with a few of my videos, and I must say it takes some time, but the results do look a lot better.
Oh and by the way, nice new itro you have for Izzy Video. I really love it. It must have taken quite some time to plan out and make it.

Stefaan

Thanks everyone!
Hi Stefaan – Thanks for the kind words on the new intro, but I didn’t make it. I hired a talented motion graphics artist to do it.
His info: http://finalecho.elance.com/

Thank you very much for sharing this nice tutorial with us.
It was too educational and informative.
I was searching for that kind of tutorial and i couldn’t find any so explicitly given.
It would be nice to give us more of what it is related to Coloring concept(basic principles for example).
Since I’m a not native speaker ,I’ve fully appreciated the way you explained all these stuff.
Congradulations and thank you .

HEllo, I am a video editor myself and I found your video awesome. What, may I wonder, is that editing program??
December 28th, 2009 at 9:42 am
What program is this? Is not in Final Cut Pro?
December 28th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
Correct, it’s not Final Cut Pro. It’s a separate application called “Color” that’s part of Final Cut Studio.
If you have Final Cut Studio, it’s likely you already have the application.
Thanks for watching!
All the best,
Izzy
