Best of Izzy Video DVD
Many people have asked me to release an Izzy Video DVD. I’m considering doing that, but I have a question for all of you: If I created an Izzy Video DVD that had many of the most popular Izzy Video episodes (and maybe some additional original content), would you buy it?
I’d probably price it somewhere between $10 and $20.
If the answer is yes or no, please let me know in the comments, along with any of your thoughts on the subject.
It would be a time-consuming project, and I certainly don’t want to put in the effort unless there’s a fairly large interest in it.

Hi,
I’m a the Manager of a City Learning Centre in the UK. We are a centre of technology and we deal with many students from the local secondary schools. Media Studies is a booming area of study and everyone wants to do videos. Your podcasts have been a big help. Short and to the point they get across some important tips about camera work and composition. We would be interested in buying such a DVD.
I’m not sure of where your experience lies, but we would love some tips showing how to shoot different styles of video. Many of our students shoot either mock adverts or short films. The way in which they need to be shot is different to that of an interview or documentary.
Have you seen Film school in a box (http://www.filmschoolinabox.net). Looks like a good project and an interesting idea. I wish there was a similar thing for younger students, to help them appreciate how both to edit, but also the fact that if you haven’t shot enough decent footage, then you will not be able to make a decent film.
In answer to your orginal question, yes I would like to buy a DVD of your tutorials, for use with my students. Keep up the good work. I always look forward to your podcasts.

Hi
To be honest I would NOT buy it as long as I can download the episodes for free from your site.

Israel,
Personally, I’m content to watch the videos online on the computer I use for editing. It’s nice that they are always available for viewing and I don’t need to find a DVD, wait for it to load menus, then browse for the chapter I want. On the Internet, I can just pull up your site and find the file I want to watch in less than a minute.
That said, I think there is definitely a market for a DVD version of your tutorials. I’m on the video team at my church, and we have semi-monthly meetings where we discuss current and future projects, as well as covering training on lighting, editing, shooting, etc… I’ve shown a few of your videos to the team, and I know that the church would definitely buy a copy if a DVD became available, since it’s hard for a group to see the videos on a computer monitor.
Since the videos are already produced, you don’t really need to make a big deal of the DVD production. I’m sure you could spend hours making fancy intros and motion menus, but I think dividing the videos into a few categories, and then listing each session with a representative thumbnail would be simple and easy to navigate. Nothing drives me crazy more than a DVD that takes a few minutes to load before you can even access the Main Menu.
Anyways…. I love the videos, and I wish you the best.

Ditto to what Peter said. On the other side I would easily pay $5 for a downloadable DVD image… well no, strike that. 4.7GB is too large for download. If you recompress everything to MPEG-4 with say XVID, you can make a CD image. 700MB is more bearable for download and you don’t have to ship physical DVDs. Oh, and it would be great if you cut out most intro/titles/”I want to tell you something really important in the end” stuff.

Why buy it when its downloadable… the time is past buying dvd’s

Why buy the cow…I think you know the rest.

I’m in the UK so although it’s a ncie idea, I’d probably just continue watching your excellent web tips. Why not create some ‘premium’ more in depth tutorials that could be purchased but keep the short tips and tricks for free.

Yes, i would pay $20 for an Izzy Video DVD. Amazon would be safe and reliable.

Yes I would buy it BUT I am not at all sure you should do it . . . TIME – ENERGY – there is the real limitation – if you get into it so much else you could do would be lost . . . you are in an expansive mode that is what needs to be nurtured and protected . . . thanks for your work

Yes, you should put them together on a DVD, advertise them on your site and at the end of your podcasts. They will make money for you while you are making more videos. We have been with you throughout, but I imagine new people are coming everyday and need to get caught up.
When you have speaking engagements, you will have a product to sell. As for those who say they would not buy, many of us who have taken freely would love to have a tangible way to support you. The idea another writer had about premium content is also excellent. Both ideas should be done.
Keep ‘em coming!

Israel … you are a genius! If you decided to put out a DVD I would be the first in line to purchase it. I check your site daily for new content and I am totally hooked!
Thanks for your commitment to high quality video. You got me turned on to video as well as still photography.
Thanks

Yes, I would pay up to $20 for a DVD (MPEG-2) of *all* of the Izzy Video tutorials on it.

Israel, a few weeks ago I was planning to send you and email asking you exactly about your material distribution on DVD. I’ll pay up to $20+shipping cost. If you allow me, I’d like to recomend you to start your DVD with the basic tutorials (equipment, lighting, etc) to the more advance ones (techniques, etc ). This will be excellent for novice video users (like me). Also, not everyone uses Macs so I’d leave out Final Cut tutorials. Keep up the good work.

A dvd on digital video for 20 dollars is a very good deal. I would buy it. Also, great work.

That’s an absolute, “Hell Yeah!” As previously mentioned I’ve found your videos to be invaluable.
June 22nd, 2007 at 9:09 pm
I would definitely be interested in this. Please let me know when/if you do it.
June 23rd, 2007 at 3:56 am
I found your videos instructive and entertaing and made, for personal purposes, dvd’s from episodes 1-24 and 25-48, that I distributed to a few video friends also. You should talk to Don McAllister who produces weekly screencasts on Mac software (and hardware), what you can expect in sales and how much effort it will be.
Het has produced several DVD’s from his screencasts as well (www.screencastsonline.com)
His mail address is screencastsonline@gmail.com
I hope we will see more of your video podcasts.

I don’t know how long you have been away, but it’s good that you are back. I’m so glad that all things with your family I believe is better now. I can’t say enough about your tutorials, they are very much needed. I am a photographer but I have friends that want to shoot video but dosen’t have a clue of how, and with your tutorials they will come up to speed. I hope the best for you and your site, and pray that through God all things are possible for your endeavors. Once again thank you for your support and help for all of the little people. Wow, I’m certainly getting mixed responses to this question! Here’s what I’m thinking at this point: I’ll go ahead and make the DVD because there are at least a few people who want it. It will be a fun process anyway.
What’s the time line? Well, that’s hard to say. My guess is that the DVD will come out in time for Christmas.
Thanks, everyone for all the responses! I appreciate the candid feedback, regardless of the position.

Yes I would certainly purchase a dvd of your top lessons. You have a great show and I have a nephew (along with myself) who is very interested in videography that would greatly benefit from it. Not to mention would make a great Christmas gift !!! (*_*)

One question: would the DVD contain the exact same video already on the site? Would be nice to extend them a little beyond the very basics.
One suggestion: please cut off the time consuming intros.
August 21st, 2007 at 1:09 am
Ervin, I was thinking that it would be mostly higher resolution versions of the videos already on the site, with some new original content along with them. Sort of a blend I guess…
