Izzy Video 055 – Comparing Hard and Soft Light

My goal in this installment of Izzy Video is simply to illustrate the fundamental differences between hard and soft lighting.
To do this, I light an orange using both a hard light source and a soft light source. The results are quite different.
By the way, the lights I use are a Chimera Small Video Pro light box (for the soft light), and a Lowel Pro Light (for the hard light).

Nice job as always. I think you could do a four minute piece just on soft lights. You could have shown the back of the chimera, light box, and explained exactly how the light and diffusion work. The larger the light and the more diffusion used creates a softer image. For example, a 2,000 watt light from three feet away requires more diffusion than a 1,000 watt from the same distance. This in turn creates a softer light source. I once saw a 5,000 watt light/chimera
used for close ups. Needless to say the chimera was heavily diffused. It created a beautiful soft light.

I used a frosted shower curtain in front of the window and I was amazed at the color and details it brought out. For this clip, in post production all I did was put the blacks down a bit, the rest is natural,
