My goal in this installment of Izzy Video is simply to illustrate the fundamental differences between hard and soft lighting.
To do this, I light an orange using both a hard light source and a soft light source. The results are quite different.
By the way, the lights I use are a Chimera Small Video Pro light box (for the soft light), and a Lowel Pro Light (for the hard light).

If you’re looking for an entry-level lighting kit, I recommend looking into the Lowel DV Creator 55 Kit. Although I’ve never personally used this exact kit, it has several great lights. I own multiple Lowel lights and they’re effective and durable.

I’ve had this question come up several times recently, and it’s difficult to answer. The truth is that almost any camera you get these days is going to be great, because they all have such advanced technology and great imagery.
That said, after doing some of my own research, I really like the Sony HVR-V1U. I never use removable lenses, so this could really work for me. Do any of you own this camera? Or have any of you used it? If so, what do you think of it?

Digital Juice has many high quality tutorials on their website. And they’re free. I’ve been watching them all morning.
Here’s the problem: When you visit their website, the tutorials aren’t easy to find. Their home page has a lot of great information on it, but it wasn’t immediately clear where I should go to watch the videos.
Anyway, they call the tutorial section of their site DJTV. Once you find your way there, they have several different series of shows. Some are about audio. Others are about work flow. My favorite is “Field of View”. All Izzy Video viewers would enjoy that show.
I highly recommend you check Digital juice out.
Note: Thanks to Jorge for sending me the link to Digital Juice!

We all want to learn to shoot better video, and one way to do that is to learn how to shoot better photos. Robert Scoble posted an extremely fascinating video of Kris Krug (a very talented photographer) speaking on how to shoot better photos.
Here’s the thing: I highly recommend you watch it, and then every time he says the word camera, think “video camera.”
When I watch this type of online video, I always get inspired.
Thanks, Robert Scoble, for posting it!

Travel Matte - Luma is a compositing tool built into Final Cut Pro. You can use it to create custom mattes in specific shapes. In this video, I show how to use it to blur out a subject’s face. I chose this topic because it’s one of the more obscure tools in Final Cut Pro, and I haven’t seen many tutorials on the subject.
