Izzy Video 37 - Machinima

Izzy Video 37 is a quick introduction to machinima. If you don’t know what machinima is, don’t worry. You’re not alone. It’s pretty cutting-edge stuff right now. For film-makers it offers the chance to have a moving story-board. Or you can create your whole film there.
See what I’m talking about in Izzy Video 37.
I used my favorite Brother Love song again in this podcast, courtesy of music.podshow.com.
I know Izzy Video 37 isn’t going to be for everyone, but I’m sure some of you might be interested in creating narratives in this virtual world. To those of you who hate this one, I apologize, but I have to stray from the mainstream every once in a while.

Izzy, since you’re doing something on machinima, you might also find it useful to talk about more serious 3D animation softwar. Blender is available for free, and is capable of quite professional results. The initial learning curve with 3D software can be a little high, but the rewards, even early on, are well worth it. They’re also great tools for learning about cameras and lighting and things, since you can easily setup stages, and move virtual lights and cameras around, etc.
Have a look at Elephant’s Dream, which is a free demo animation that was made with Blender:

Also, blender itself can be downloaded from:

Hardly Hated. I signed up for second life after hearing about it on TWIT. What I hope viewers will get from this episode, and what I was hoping you were going to get around to during the episode, is that it is a great way for beginers to learn to frame shots, use motion, and play with a bunch of the other things you have taught us in your videos without having to waste time, tape, or hire/beg family and friends to pose while we learn.
But, of course, now that you have found second life we will never hear from you again… :)

Great to see more people playing in this space. SL has so many untapped possibilities.

Just a super job on the podcasts! They’re short, concise, and professionally delivered. I keep them all for reference and refresher points. Your video on SL was very timely as just found it myself.
THANKS again and keep up the GREAT work.

Just answering the question about a capturing tool. Either you can use the builtin video capture function (although it never really worked for me) or you can use Fraps at http://fraps.com/ (but it costs some bucks).
There is also a Machinima Forum for Second Life in the forums on the site and there are sometimes classes. More on that can be found at http://alt-zoom.com
Oh, and here are videos I made in SL: http://feeds.feedburner.com/TaoTakashiOnAir
(Suzanne Vega als recently had an appearance in Second Life. There’s a video about it available here: http://blip.tv/file/57262/ )

[...] I just discovered that Israel Hyman also made a little piece about machinima in Second Life. He’s not showing any SL related techniques though but of course the techniques he shows normally in his DV Tutorials mostly apply to SL, too. [...]

Look who’s showing up here!
(And I just noticed by looking at the comment form alone that this is a WordPress blog — what can I say, I’m a big fan and I just switched my blog over to this platform.)
Israel, I really like your header image. Reminds me of when I was a youth in Thailand, some of the hotels had big chessboards with jumbo pieces, much as the ones you are sitting between.
Gentle intro, I really like how you did the splash with your letters “falling” in and out — how’d you do that movie magic?
I’m not the fondest of the word “machinima” (reminds me of “paper mache”), but seeing as how it has popular usage and means more to more people day by day, I use it to communicate.
Hope you’re enjoying Second Life, Israel. T’care! :)

This is a fun introduction to machinima. It inspired me to create a video tutorial series about machinima using World of Warcraft.
Check it out, you might like it!
