    I noticed with this podcast and a few of your others that the quicktime movie just crashes part way through. Not sure if there is a problem with the files or if it’s just at my end…

    Thank you very much for the feedback. I certainly hope that my videos aren’t causing anybody’s systems to crash. This is the first time I’ve heard of it.

    Hopefully, it will be a temporary and easy-to-fix problem.

    I noticed that you used a stabilization tool – a glidecam? – to smooth the shots. Is there a low-cost option for home shooters to use – or a particular brnad you’d recommend? I’m using an Optura 600.

    Really enjoy the videos and the advice.

    Dale,

    Yes, the tool I’m using was a Glidecam 2000. I picked it up on ebay for about $200. Frankly, it’s the only one I’ve every used, and I’ve found it very useful. It takes a lot of practice, and it works much, much better with no wind, because the balance is very sensitive.

    I believe it will work with your camera. If you don’t want to spend the money on this particular item, there are many other options. I’ve heard you can even Google “Build your own steadicam” and find sites that show you how to make your own after a trip to the hardware store.

    Finally, holding the camera in both hands, the way I demonstrate on the video, can produce very effective results.

    The most popular web site for building your own steadicam is at http://littlegreatideas.com/steadycam … it’s about $15 in parts and you’ll need a drill. You can also buy a kit for $40 plus shipping, which is what I did. It’s a great inexpensive alternative if you don’t mind looking like you have plumbing hanging off your camera! (I’m not affiliated with the site…just a customer.)

    Alfred Hitchcock invented the last move (zooming, while dollying). Actually not sure if he invented it, or perfected it. I think he used it in almost all his movies somewhere. P.S. Love your site and thanks for all your info, and your children are great!

    I really love your tutorials as I am a real amature…
    Just a tip on dolly shots that may help you. I once used a wheelchair for a dolly shot and it worked a treat. The bicycle type wheels take the bumps out of your shots and it makes holding the camera still easier, try it..
